Jeff Tyler's journey to culinary success has been marked by challenges, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As an apprentice chef in Japan, his introduction through his boss at Taradale's Ormlie Lodge led to a unique opportunity to work with a company that owned 50 restaurants.
Despite the initial struggles, Jeff's passion for culinary exploration took him to London, where he worked alongside award-winning chefs. His unique insight into Japanese cuisine made him a sought-after talent, leading him to a position as the chef de cuisine at Mandarin Oriental Marrakech in Morocco. However, the experience turned out to be disappointing as the hotel encountered difficulties.
Fortune smiled upon Jeff when he was contacted by Arkady Novikov, a renowned Russian restaurateur. Jeff joined Novikov's venture in London, taking on the challenge of designing the kitchens, hiring staff, and creating a unique dining experience. The pressure was exacerbated by language barriers and the weight of high expectations. Despite the hardships, Jeff's talent and determination prevailed, and Novikov Restaurant soon became are sounding success.
Under Novikov's guidance, Jeff honed his skills, learned to understand what people truly desired, and transformed his approach to cooking. The restaurant earned accolades from influential critics, and its turnover doubled within days of a positive review. Novikov Restaurant has expanded to multiple locations worldwide, solidifying its reputation as one of Europe's highest-grossing standalone establishments.
Inspired by his journey, Jeff opened The Local Café in Taradale, Hawke's Bay. The café offers a cosy atmosphere and a menu that offers a range of delicious food, coffee and sweet treats.
